Things to Do in Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix is a great place for singles, families, and Baby-Boomers!  There is plenty to see and do, so everyone should find things to do that fit their interests.

Phoenix International Raceway
The Phoenix International Raceway is a must see when in the area. Placed right in the middle of the Estrella Mountains, the Phoenix International Raceway has seen many races since its 1964 debut. For the next 20 plus years, the Raceway was home to races and great drivers, but it wasn’t until 1988 that NASCAR came to Phoenix with the Nextel Cup Series. After that the Phoenix International Raceway really hit its prime. The best time to go is the Fall NASCAR Weekend where there are plenty of races and other activities to enjoy.

Sports Arena—University of Phoenix
The Sports Arena at the University of Phoenix is out of this world. There are so many amenities to take advantage of. These include an Olympic size swimming pool, outdoor playing fields, athletics training room, cardio room and weight room, racquetball courts, and a gymnasium for indoor tennis, basketball, and volleyball. Intramural sports are played here as well. Members and students may use the facilities on a first come first served basis.

Phoenix Zoo
The Phoenix Zoo is outstanding although it has not been around as long as many of the country’s other zoos. An interesting fact about the zoo is that it is privately owned and non-profit. The Phoenix Zoo never closes a single day, not even for Christmas, and is always ready to welcome individuals of all ages. Visiting the zoo during the summer months is fun, but if you want to really see the animals, go during the morning hours when the animals aren’t searching for shade yet.

South Mountain Park
With more than 16,000 acres this park is possibly the country’s largest park. Horseback riding, trail walking, hiking, and mountain biking are just some of the popular activities along the 50 miles of trails. Dobbins Lookout is the park’s highest point and is a great end to a long hike. Driving to Dobbins Lookout is also a possibility. The view of the Valley of the Sun is simply beautiful and worth all the effort.

Chase Field
This ballpark has an amazing retractable roof that can be closed in only five minutes! That means that just in case it begins to rain, which is rare, the roof can be closed and play can continue. There is also a natural turf field and air conditioning in this facility, which combined with the retractable roof, makes it the only facility like this in the world. You can see Chase Field by attending a ball game or one of the other events held there. There is also a restaurant called Friday’s Front Row Sports Grill that is almost always open and worth a visit, too.

There are many other places to see and things to do in Phoenix, including the Desert Botanical Garden, the Heard Museum, and the Scottsdale Art Walk. There is so much to do and see that you will have fun trying to do it all, and can always return to something new and different in Phoenix, Arizona.
